Are food contact inks and coatings regulated by EU legislation?: There is no specific EU regulation for printing inks and coatings, but framework regulation 1935/2004 applies to all materials. EFSA's guidelines are central to the assessment of NIAS.
How are coatings and paints tested?: Via migration test and NIAS analysis. The test is adapted to the material type and contact conditions and is carried out according to accredited methods.
What risks are associated with paints and coatings?: In case of insufficient curing or formulation, chemical components can migrate into food – especially when in contact with acidic or fatty products.
