What types of materials are there?
Wood, bamboo and other natural materials
Wood types:
- Hardwood (beech, oak, ash, etc.)
- Softwood (pine, spruce, etc.)
- Untreated wood
- Surface-treated wood (oil, wax, etc.)
Bamboo:
- Solid bamboo
- Pressed bamboo / bamboo composite (NB: carefully assessed with regard to binders)
Other natural materials:
- Cork
- Palm leaves
- Coconut shells
- Sugarcane fiber (bagasse)
- Other plant fibers (hemp, wheat, reed, etc.)
NOTE: Natural materials must be properly treated and documented as suitable for contact with food. Bamboo composite and plant materials with resin in particular require special attention regarding legislation and migration tests.

- Is bamboo approved for food contact in the EU?
- Bamboo is not covered by a separate EU regulation, but must comply with framework regulation 1935/2004Products are assessed individually and should be tested for migration and NIAS.
- How are wood products tested for food contact?
- Wood is tested for the release of substances from surface treatments, glues and natural components such as tannins. The test follows EFSA NIAS guidelines.
- Is there a requirement for documentation?
- Yes. Manufacturers and importers must be able to provide a Declaration of Compliance (DoC). See guide to DoC.
- What are the advantages of wood and bamboo?
- They are natural, renewable and aesthetic materials with low weight and good strength. They can be a sustainable alternative to plastic and metal, but require proper processing and testing to ensure food safety.
